Here are some of our favorite books that came out on Wednesday, March 12th!
Hero! Pilot! Avenger! Captain Marvel, Earth’s Mightiest Hero with death-defying powers and an attitude to match, is back and launching headfirst into an all-new ongoing series! As Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, comes to a crossroads with a new life and new romance, she makes a dramatic decision that will alter the course of her life and the entire Marvel Universe in the months to come. It’s time to go HIGHER, FURTHER, FASTER and more in the most super-powered comic around!
To be honest, I never got into the previous series, but this is a great jumping on point for anyone interested in Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. This issue nicely ties up the threads of the previous storyline (from the previous volume of this series) and jumps you straight into some cool space action… and that is where i got hooked. I’m a sucker for a good space story, and this has the possibility of being just that.
The fantastically-foxy finale IS HERE in Freak Magnet pt 5: “Future’s End”! Emmy Award winning writer/artist Dean Haspiel (Billy Dogma, HBO’s Bored to Death) is joined by acclaimed writer J.M. DeMatteis (Abadazad, Justice League 3000) to conclude the “Freak Magnet” saga of the pulp-style hero The Fox! Our hero has won the day and defeated his evil adversaries, so why does he now find himself trapped 70 years in the past, side-by-side with the legendary hero of WW2 known as THE SHIELD?! And what does the Shield’s arctic battle-royale have to do with the diamond realm?! And will SOMEONE please tell The Fox, aka Paul Patton Jr., why he can’t just have the simple, freak-free life he wants?? Don’t miss the finale to end-em-all, and don’t miss out on collecting all five “FOX FIVE” Variant Covers to this issue! With art from Dean Haspiel, Howard Chaykin, Mike Cavallaro, Mike Norton and a special ALEX TOTH throwback edition!
Although the last issue of this series, I wanted to point out just how much FUN this book was overall. Dean Haspiel is an amazing creator, who worked with Mark Waid and JM Dematteis on the story, as well as the art chores. This is a book for fans of quirky superheroes, like Madman or the current series of Hawkeye. Keep an eye out, this was just the fist mini-series, and the Fox will be back soon!
THE GOLD KEY UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING! Superstar Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies, Amazing Spider-Man, Archer & Armstrong) and the astounding Cory Smith (Fathom) present a stunning re-imagining of Magnus: Robot Fighter you never saw coming! In the blink of an eye, young martial artist Magnus has everything taken from him…his father, his wife, his entire life. He’s suddenly thrust into a futuristic world he doesn’t understand, populated by humans and robots living together in oppression! Can Magnus fight to get his life back…and once he learns the truth about himself, will he want to?
As with Dynamite’s relaunch of TUROK, the new MAGNUS is fantastic! Plenty of nods to the various past series, but with it’s own sense of style and flavor. Plus, seeing Cory Smith on the artwork is such a bonus! The Gold Key Universe that is being done by Dynamite has been quite solid so far, leaving me little doubt that the upcoming SOLAR MAN OF THE ATOM and DOCTOR SPEKTOR are going to be just as good.
SAVE THE EMPIRE, Part One
The all-new Secret Avengers are ready to get started. Are they going to be the world’s most effective secret squad? Or will their personal issues tear them apart? U-DECIDE! Three missions kick off at the same time: one in the space, one on the ground…and one in the air. And no one’s ready. Except for the attackers. Russian spa. Helicarrier. Space station. Falling satellites. A hired hitman with nothing to lose. The Fury. WAIT. Yes. THE FURY. Why is Hawkeye still around? And why are these people chasing him? Why are Black Widow and Spider Woman in a Russian spa? Do questions in teasers excite you? RUN THE MISSION, DON’T GET SEEN, SAVE THE WORLD. NOW!
Although I liked the previous series of SECRET AVENGERS, it never quite gripped me as one of those books that was of the “must read now” variety. However, this first issue of the new regime under Ales Kot gives off a vibe not unlike that of HAWKEYE or MOON KNIGHT… offbeat, quirky, but still full of action. I look forward to seeing if this continues in the next few issues.
MANIFEST DESTINY #5
Can this book get any better? Probably, but it will have to try damn hard, as it is already top notch!
STRAY BULLETS #41 & STRAY BULLETS THE KILLER #1
The end of the old series and the beginning of the new series. Both are fantastic. Fans of David Lapham will not be disappointed.
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #29
Man, do I love me some Spider-man 2099! Oh, and this Goblin Nation story-line is moving right along. Good stuff.
